Coping and Calming Strategies

Calming and Coping Strategies are essential for all children.  It is sometimes more difficult for children with challenges. Calming strategies are used in the short-term, to provide immediate relief from stressful situations.  Coping strategies are used in the long-term to provide a more proactive approach in dealing with stress and anxiety.

Calming Strategies may include deep breathing, stretching, silently counting, using a squeeze toy or walking and getting a drink of water.

Coping Strategies may include a safe place for a child to relax, provisions of paper and markers or crayons for drawing, social stories and visual cues.
